The Valley of Flowers trek is best enjoyed during the blooming season. Outside of this period, the valley is inaccessible due to heavy snow.

You will still see fewer flowers compared to July and August, but the valley’s transformation is fascinating to witness.

During June, you’ll see fewer flowers, and the valley is filled with glaciers. If you’re looking to see more flowers, it’s best to wait until later in the season. June is also a peak holiday season in India, and the village base camps near Hemkund Sahib become crowded with Sikh pilgrims. As a result, the trek from Govindghat to Ghangaria can also be crowded with pilgrims, ponies, and porters.

In July, the Valley of Flowers is at its full bloom, and it will remain so until the end of August. If you’re a nature lover, this is the time to visit as you’ll find abundant greenery and vibrant flowers all around. If you love glaciers, it’s best to visit during the earlier weeks of July (preferably before July 15th).

By mid-July, the monsoon season begins, and the glaciers you saw in June start to melt. However, the valley still retains plenty of beauty, including colonies of Golden Lily, Anemone Tetrasepla, and Geraniums. You might even spot the rare Ladies Slipper Orchid, although it’s so rare that it may require local knowledge to locate it.

Pushpawati river bed is 6 kilometers in the Valley of Flowers. The pink shade on the river bed is due to a colony of the beautiful flower Epilobium Latifolium (River Beauty).

During this time, the valley reaches its peak in both variety and quantity of flowers. Different varieties bloom at different times throughout the month, making the valley change color almost daily. For example, in the third week of July, Geraniums dominate the landscape with violet hues, but by the first week of August, Impatiens Davendre take over and paint the valley pink.

In addition, Hemkund Sahib, located nearby, is home to unique flowers not found in the Valley of Flowers, such as Bistorta Affinis, Brahma Kamals, and Blue Poppies.

Flowers that bloom later in the season, such as the ladies’ slipper orchid and other species, can still be found, but their numbers start to decline. The valley’s color shifts to a yellowish-green as the plants mature and prepare for the cold months ahead. The glaciers are mostly melted, and you will notice fewer glaciers but plenty of berries in the valley.

Valley of Flowers in September

By September, most of the flowers in the Valley of Flowers have matured, and you will notice more berries than flowers. While it is not the best time to see flowers, the valley’s dramatic color changes make it an interesting time to visit. The clear skies and the snow-clad peaks in the distance offer beautiful views. The valley becomes quiet as the season winds down, and the leaves start turning color.

This is the final month of accessibility before the valley is covered by snow. Although you’ll see fewer flowers, the seeds from the plants will be ready for next season’s growth. September is also a great time to see the changes in the landscape, with the valley’s colors shifting rapidly as the plants mature. You can see berries, leaves turning yellow, and the onset of autumn in the region.
