I went personally to the valley of flowers after floods and the pictures in this post are all real and taken by me.

2013 is the worst year in the known history of Uttrakhand. In the month of June there were huge floods and countless people lost their life in Kedarnath. Valley of flowers and nearby area was also affected by the floods.

So friends the Good News is that the flowering area of the Valley of Flowers is totally intact after floods and only a bit of the trek is damaged from Ghangaria to Valley of Flowers. It will be rebuilt by the next season in 2014. There are various options for shoes like sports shoes, leather shoes or floaters. I have seen some crazy people even trekking bare foots into the Valley of Flowers. When I asked about it the answer was that they lost their shoes near Hemkund Shahib Gurudwara. Those Sikh people even walked bare foot over glaciers. But everybody of us can not be so rough and tough. Already we will be working very hard while trekking and right type of gears are very important specially shoes.

Officially valley of flowers opens First June every year. Valley of flowers is always beautiful. It depends upon your taste that what you would like to see.Valley of flowers is snow clad in the month of May and almost inaccessible as depicted in the picture below. You are not allowed to visit valley of flowers during this time.

What should the Minimum Age to visit Valley of Flowers?

Minimum age to visit valley of flowers, Whether kids can be taken for Valley of flowers trek.The answer is ‘Yes’ they can be taken along but not infants. The minimum age should be such that the kid should at least enjoy. There is no problem as far as the trekking part is concerned as porters are available throughout the trek at a very reasonable cost of Rs. 700-1000 per day (Prices in the year 2012) depending upon demand and supply.

The total trip of Valley of Flowers takes a minimum of 6 days from Haridwar and for the people coming from far areas of the globe the trip becomes 8-12 days.It is an irony that people spent so much time in reaching Valley of Flowers and still spend only one day in it. By no means can one see its real beauty in a day especially between 21st July to 10th August. This is the time when you will find maximum number of flowers in the valley. By maximum I mean total quantity of flowers in quantity and in variety.

Whether Auli should be part of Valley of flowers tour ?


Auli is only 14 km from Joshimath. Just by adding in your itinerary you can visit Auli and trek to Gorson Bhugyal. The Gorson Bhugyal (alpine meadows) is very beautiful place and a must visit. What is the cost of hiring Helicopter, pony, porter, palanquin etc ?

Helicopter is available between Govindghat and Ghangaria. Cost per person for Helicopter is approximately Rs 3000 per person per side. It varies every year. In 2017, it was Rs 3240. Cost of hiring pony, porter, palanquin etc is highly volatile. It depends upon demand and supply but porter take Rs 2500 to Rs 4000 per day depending upon the weight. Since four people carrying a palanquin it is little costly and cost varies between Rs 6000 to Rs 12000 per day. Pony cost Rs 600 to Rs 1200. But during June month these costs may go as high as 200% because of the high pilgrim season.

Does rain spoil trip to Valley of flowers ?

Valley of flowers is in full bloom during July and August. This is also the monsoon period. Many people are worried about landslides. But fortunately the road condition between Haridwar and Govindghat has improved a lot. One may have to wait for few hours to get the landslides clear by the Border Road Organization. In rare case, if the landslide are too much then one may have to extend the trip. But this is very rare. People coming to Valley of flowers normally go to Badrinath also. Between Govindghat and Badrinath there is a place called Lambagad. It rains almost daily in the evening at this place and authority normally clears it next morning. One should go to Badrinath and come back before 3 pm, sooner is better. In Valley of flowers and Ghangaria it normally rains during night time. Whatever, is written here is our experience and we don’t claim it to be right 100 % always.

What is the opening and closing timing of Valley of flowers ?

Valley of Flowers opens at 7.00 am every day and last entry is allowed till 2.00 pm. You need to get out of the valley by 5 pm. You should be at the entry gate at 6.45 so as to take your entry ticket sooner and enter by 7.00 am. You should start back by 1.30pm so as to reach back by 5.00 pm.

What is the opening and closing date of Valley of flowers ?

Valley of flowers opens on 1st June every year and closes on 4th October. However, forest department can change these dates. It is seen in past and Valley of flowers opened till 10th October. Normally opening and closing date of Valley of flowers is same as Hemkund sahib.

How to reach Valley of flowers ?


You can reach Haridwar from New Delhi by road or by train. Air-conditioned Volvo buses are available from New Delhi to Haridwar. You can take bus from Anand Vihar Inter State Bus Terminus at New Delhi. Getting to Valley of flowers.

How difficult is Valley of flowers trek ?


The trek begins at Govindghat. Govindghat is 25 kilometers before Badrinath. Govindghat is at the height of 5500 feet and Ghangaria is at the height of 10,200 feet. That is the gain 4700 feet after trekking for 14 km. Valley of flowers trek Difficulty level.

    • Hello Prachi ji,

      There is no effect of fire in valley of flowers. The Valley of Flowers is on higher altitude and covered with snow these days. The fire was only in lower region and due to rain its almost put off. The tours are after July month. So you need not worry about that.

    Is there any tour package/ itinerary which includes Kedarnath, Badrinath, and Valley Of Flowers, which could be completed in 13th(Rudraprayag)-19(Rishikesh)th i.e. 7 days ?

    We are the group of 4 persons and we are willing to visit valley of flowers, will you kindly inform me about when the valley of flower become in Full Bloom and what are your charges for 4 perosns. And what are the posibilities for camping near valley is it possible of not.

      Camping is not possible near the valley, camping is allowed near the helipad. Valley of flowers will be in full bloom in the month of July and August,
