Tip 47 Best time to visit the Valley of Flowers. Actually, when you come to the Valley of Flowers, it's a place you can't easily keep coming back to, so you should know: what is the best time to visit. The valley stays buried in snow for about 7–8 months a year and officially it opens for four months — from 1 June to the end of September. Look behind where I'm standing — it's July, the 20th–22nd. The waterfall you see behind me — behind it there are lots of glaciers too Some plants are just coming up, like this one — the golden fern Further back, wherever the snow melts, plants keep coming up As the snow melts, plants come up and flowers keep coming Normally, July and August have the most flowers By the end of August the flowers slowly finish their life cycle and die back — but their tubers stay underground. So the best time also depends on what you want to see. If it's flowers, come in July–August but the valley is a complete package — flowers, waterfalls like this, beautiful peaks, shallow streams to cross and lovely flowers are always there Great scenic views too. For more glaciers and snow, you can come in June. The valley isn't open in May. I came in June this time too — our camps are set up here — even then you see great glaciers and some flower varieties too, like rhododendron — the buransh flower, and many more that bloom then. The varieties keep changing — and through all four months you'll find flowers, but different varieties. Still, for the most flowers, it's July–August when you'll find them. Thank you.

What a spot — it always grows among rocks like these Come a little closer — look, such a beautiful flower. In the valley it's only here and a spot or two more — never certain while at Hemkund Sahib it's very common and easy to find because the valley is a little lower than Hemkund Sahib, so it's rarer here — you'll find it deeper in. Trek tip We started the Valley of Flowers early this morning, and the big plus: no rush, and we saw the flowers properly Stunning flowers here — and I'd say, if you like flowers even a little, this is a paradise of flowers. The weather: superb — rain at night, clear days so you can enjoy the valley. The government has also made full arrangements so that even in the rain no visitor has any trouble. Tip 20 As for places to stay in Ghangaria village, you'll find plenty of hotels — in May–June, book in advance otherwise you may even get one at the last minute. For food there are lots of restaurants, with full North Indian, Chinese and that kind of food. The internet for the last few years — it's OK, but you can't rely on it for work — if you want to trade shares, you won't manage it here — well, you might, but it's not certain, and there's no Wi-Fi here. Tip 22 When you come to Ghangaria, be sure to bring enough cash because there's no ATM here, and the internet comes and goes, so there's no guarantee online payment will work As for charging your phone, and electricity — it's usually there, but this is a very remote area, so after heavy rain, if the lines along the route break in a landslide, power can take 2–3 days to come back. Tip 25 When you come on the Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib tour — Hemkund Sahib is at over 14,000 ft, the valley goes up to about 12,000 ft, and Ghangaria is at 10,500 ft so some people get oxygen problems, or other troubles. The medical help available here: there's a small dispensary with oxygen one inside the gurudwara, and one or two small medical shops — you'll find basic medicines. But whatever medicines you need, do bring them with you though some basics are available here. Thank you

Tip 48 The Valley of Flowers tour means at least four days of trekking and over those four days, while trekking, the weather can change very quickly. We came here to shoot, and look — it's gone cloudy; when we arrived it was sunny. So always keep an umbrella or poncho — pack a daypack with your rain gear, sunscreen, and a hat against the sun — all in it, because the weather is very dynamic and if it rains, don't assume it'll last all day — it often changes very quickly. Tip 50 When you come on the Valley of Flowers tour, the right type of shoes is very, very important or your whole trek could be spoilt — no fun, just trouble Trekking shoes need a few basic qualities First, you cross many shallow streams, so your shoes need a good grip — so that when your foot lands, it doesn't slip I've seen Woodland shoes look sturdy and good, but their soles are so hard they slip on rocks. So after doing all the research, and my nearly 20 years of experience, the best shoe I've found for here is Decathlon's Forclaz Other Decathlon shoes work too — but wear them in and get comfortable for a few days before you come — they're a bit heavier than normal shoes. Trek tip On the day you come into the valley, there are no shops anywhere inside to buy anything. So especially on valley day, bring a packed lunch — have breakfast at your hotel because the valley gate opens at 7, and the earlier you enter, the deeper you get — the deeper parts are the most beautiful. One thing I've noticed over the years — personally, I lose my appetite in the valley, because of the altitude food doesn't taste good — I usually bring an apple or something sweet; you can bring a paratha, pickle, and definitely some dry fruit. One more thing: carry an empty water bottle from your hotel — you'll find running water in many places fill up, drink, carry a little and keep going — that’s how to manage the day. Thank you

Trek tip I've just reached the Pushpawati river bed. Look — this is why it's called Pushpawati: flowers everywhere. This pink flower is Epilobium latifolium. The 2013 floods almost wiped it out here and I'm so happy that in huge numbers it has spread again. We left our camp at about 6:45 and entered the valley at 7 then slowly climbed a steep stretch and kept going — we saw lovely flowers like geranium and bistort, lots of Codonopsis — so many flowers on the way some were over — we saw edelweiss too and little by little we've reached here. It's started to drizzle — quite normal here. When you come to the valley, you must come this far I believe otherwise your tour isn't complete Sadly, many people don't make it — for lack of stamina or knowledge. On the way here you cross at least five, six or seven streams so you need proper gear, and rain gear too good shoes, and a packed lunch. Trek tip When you come to the Valley of Flowers, you have to cross shallow streams like this so your shoes must be really good. And you'll wonder why there's no permanent bridge. Actually, there's a glacier here most of the year — only in summer and monsoon does it flow like this so a bridge would be swept away. The bridge ahead, that I'll cross too — the Forest Department rebuilds it every year and this wood is bhojpatra — Himalayan birch I really enjoy this. Thank you

हिमालयन स्नोबेरी · The Himalayan snowberry

Trek tip Right after crossing this stream, look — here's a geranium, and I've found a lovely berry — it's called the Himalayan snowberry, or Gaultheria. I won't pick it, but let me show you. Look — it's a blue berry. When you eat it, it's just like Iodex — it feels like you've licked Iodex! And it helps clear the throat — it can even ease a sore throat. Thank you

Trek tip We've come up to the waterfall — and look, this is golden fern. In the valley it'll be much bigger by now, and here — see, there's a glacier just behind — it melted only a few days ago As the glacier melts, new plants come up behind it elsewhere, like on the right here, they’re already bigger; here they come later, there later still — so a key thing for your visit: plants come only after all the snow has melted normally by July–August; by early July it has happened then different varieties keep coming — today is 21 July, or the 22nd — let me show you a couple of flowers look — remember that one? This is its little brother and this is Fragaria — the little wild strawberry. You can eat that. And this, you see, is Morina longifolia. Look — this is from last year; it has thorns, careful last year's flower — it has dropped; no new one grows on this Let me show you more — you saw vajradanti earlier too, there are many more — flowering is just arriving here, because the glacier only just melted here; in the valley it melted earlier Up there, see — anemone too, white flowers like these. There were lots at Gorson top too. Thank you

Trek tip One more thing — to climb these rocks beside the trail, many people crush lots of flowers — especially at Bamandhaur, right at the start of the valley. Please don’t — it really hurts me I came up here because the path itself was all boulders, so I climbed this one — and the views from here are great. You could shoot a time-lapse from here — it'd look great. Thank you

Trek tip Another important thing — the valley is quite clean, it isn't dirty but footfall has grown a lot recently, so whatever you bring in, like a Frooti — never throw its garbage here. It's your responsibility to nature, and you're legally bound too — you simply can't litter. Thank you

हेमकुंड साहिब: सुबह जल्दी निकलें · Hemkund Sahib: leave early

Tip 24 Once you reach Ghangaria village, you do the Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib from there. For the valley you should leave around 6–7 in the morning, wearing rain gear and proper shoes and make it a full-day tour. But the important thing about Hemkund Sahib: if you go on foot, it takes at least 5–6 hours, depending on your fitness. It's only 6 km — but since it takes 6 hours, look, it's all clouded over up there — Hemkund Sahib is back there and if it's cloudy when you arrive, you won't enjoy it Best way: on foot, leave at 4 or 5 am and on a pony, leave by 6 so you arrive before the clouds — the views only show when it’s clear Hemkund usually clouds over by 8 to 10 am. Do go — some people skip Hemkund; don't. Many flowers that you won't find in the valley grow at Hemkund — especially the Blue Poppy and Brahma Kamal. Thank you

हेमकुंड का झरना · The Hemkund overflow waterfall

Tip 18 This waterfall you see behind me comes from the Hemkund Sahib lake — with mountains all around it; this is its overflow A really beautiful waterfall — and trekking along its side, I've found lovely flowers too, like vajradanti, wild ajwain, and Arisaema — called snake lily or cobra lily — lots of flowers like these bloom here. So when you come to the valley, if you keep one extra day, you can walk up to this waterfall — it takes 2–3 hours, but it's great fun. Thank you.

सीनियर सिटिज़न: पोनी, पालकी, पोर्टर · Seniors: pony, palki, porter

Trek tip When senior citizens want to visit the Valley of Flowers, or people who aren't very fit — since it involves trekking — how to manage it? The tour needs four days of trekking Govindghat to Ghangaria, Ghangaria back to Govindghat, one day in the valley, and one day Hemkund Between Govindghat and Ghangaria, ponies are available, a helicopter too, and if you don't want to ride a pony, you can take a palki — and if you’re light, a single porter can carry you. That way you skip the trek — it costs a bit, but you'll reach Ghangaria. In the valley, neither ponies nor helicopters are allowed so you can only come by porter or palki but they won’t bring you to where I’m sitting — the valley’s most beautiful point — the Pushpawati river bed at the far end, with these flowers — the palki bearers don’t come this far but there’s a place called Bamandhaur, about 4 km before this — you can come that far by palki and on Hemkund Sahib day, palki, porter and pony are all available — using all of these, you can do the Valley of Flowers tour comfortably, even if you're a senior citizen or not so fit. Trek tip When you come to the valley with children, the big question is: what is the minimum age to visit? How old should your child be to bring them here? Look — if the child walks well on their own, like 6–7 years old, that's great — they should be old enough to enjoy it themselves Never bring a child just to suffer. Actually, children trek better than adults — 12–14-year-olds are the best; they trek really well, better than grown-ups. And if you still bring a small child who won’t trek, a porter carries a basket — sit them in it and skip the trek. Do bring your kids — but not very small ones, because oxygen is a little low here, and if something goes wrong you could face real trouble. So don't come here with a very small child. Thank you

Guest story We are enjoying this trip — Gorson top, bugyal — the whole trip very much. Our full family is here: two kids, two daughters-in-law, two grand- children, with my wife — and it is on her birthday. We had been right up to the top — beautiful views, though the snow-capped mountains were covered with clouds — but beautiful views, and on the way amazing flowers, and a few wild strawberries to top it. The organisation by Blue Poppy for this particular trek was really good. Right from last night's dinner to breakfast to the packed lunch, the food was very good. Our guide is extremely knowledgeable. The support staff are very helpful and hospitable — we have had a great time. How did you feel? — My feelings: I am around 61 years, and today is my birthday — a very, very nice gift from my family: my son planned, my husband sponsored I'm enjoying my trip — it's heavenly, awesome, picturesque and I love this place. Though I found it a bit difficult, I could make it because everyone is motivating here — they give you rest when you want rest, juice when you want juice. So it was really good
